Pearling in the Arabian Gulf: A Kuwaiti Memoir
Published in Hardcover by London Center of Arab Studies (May, 2001)
Authors: Sayf Marzuq Shamlan, Peter Clark, and Saif Marzooq Al-Shamlan
Average review score:

A fascinating and involving autobiography
Pearling In The Arabian Gulf: A Kuwaiti Memoir by Saif Marzooq al-Shamlan is a picturesque, poetic, and thoughtful memoir, aptly translated into English by Peter Clark. Based on documentary and oral evidence and enhanced with a section of black and white historical photographs, Pearling in the Arabian Gulf provides the reader with a crystal-clear vision of the pearling industry from 1900 to the 1930s. Deadly rebellions at sea are chronicled along with the more mundane concerns of an industry and way of life that eventually became supplanted by the development of the Japanese cultured pearl. Highly recommended reading, Pearling In The Arabian Gulf is a fascinating and involving autobiography, an accomplished contribution to Kuwaiti and Gulf of Arabia historical studies, and a must for any non-specialist general reader with an interest in the evolution of the pearling industry.

Wonderful book for younger kids too!
My 3 year old son found this book one day while waiting the the pediatricians office. He loved it so much I read it to him 3 times before the doctor came in. The language in it was above his level in most cases but the pictures just enthralled him. I will be ordering it for him! :)

Pediatric Emergencies: A Manual for Prehospital Care Providers (2nd Edition)
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (15 January, 1998)
Authors: Martin Eichelberger, Jane W. Ball, Geraldine L. Pratsch, and John R. Clark
Average review score:

A must for your medical bookshelf!
This is one of the most valuable pediatric resources ever written. While the title suggests that it is written for the prehospital community, the no nonsense approach to pedaitric emergencies has application for anyone caring for children, from EMT to MD. There is something here for everyone to learn.

The book's organized approach begins by highlighting growth & developement and how children respond to an emergency and then builds on that to provide an excellent overview of medicial emergencies and trauma care. The entire book places an emphasis on the continuum of care and the importancet of involving parents in the emegency care of their child.

Well researched and strongly written, this book is appropriate for first time students or professionals who just want to brush up on their pediatrics

Personal Health Profile
Published in Paperback by Health InFacts, Inc. (23 December, 1996)
Authors: Laura A. Clark and Maxine L. Moon
Average review score:

An Excellent Tool for all Consumers of Healthcare Srvcs.
The Personal Health Profile is an excellent tool to help all health care consumers compile and organize key clinical and demographic information. The PHP will help the consumer to save time during any healthcare encounter and may help to save the consumer's life in an emergency situation. The PHP is organized in a manner that allows the individual to tailor the profile to meet his or her needs. Once historical data has been logged, it is a simple task to make updates after each encounter. The resulting profile chronicles an individual's health history in a logical format. The profile is contained within a 3-ring binder and contains 15 tabbed sections with instructions and forms in each section. There are plastic bags for photos, sensitive documents and health insurance cards. Pockets inside the front and back covers allow insertion of additional information. Any form can be taken out for photocopying during a health encounter which saves the consumer time in completing redundant forms in various settings. In an emergency, a healthcare provider can quickly determine any allergies or chronic health conditions in addition to recent test results and current medications. At the very least, this information will help the provider make quality treatment decisions more efficiently and at best, it will save the consumer's life by helping to avoid unnecessary delays in treatment and adverse drug reactions. The authors are to be commended for their efforts in providing a portable database for us to easily carry with us wherever we go.

Pharisee Among the Philistines: The Diary of Judge Matthew P. Deady, 1871-1892
Published in Hardcover by Oregon Historical Society Press (November, 2000)
Authors: Malcolm Clark and Matthew P. Deady
Average review score:

This is Fun history
This diary removes the dust from the personalities of giants of Oregon history. Deady was founder of the U of Oregon, a federal district court judge for almost forty years, and a regent of Stanford University. He should have been a stuffed shirt; but this diary mnakes it clear that in his prosperous years he retained the affable social skills he had acquired as a blacksmith, newspaper salesman and small town lawyer and politician. He comments on the personalities and foibles of all around him, and he was surrounded by the people who shaped Oregon. This is a very enjoyable read, and Malcolm Clark's footnotes and chapter notes do an excellent job of providing context. Reading this has prompted me to seek out more information about Deady and his companions.

Photography by Infrared: Its Principles and Applications
Published in Textbook Binding by John Wiley & Sons (March, 1978)
Authors: Henry Lou, Gibson, Henry Louis Gibson, and Walter Clark
Average review score:

The definitive guide to infrared photography
This book, the most comprehensive reference work on infrared photography, is unfortunately out of print. There's more solid information in this book than in all the pretty coffee-table books on IR photography put together.

Even the most recent edition, 1978, has some outdated data on specific films, but the laws of physics haven't changed, so Gibson's extremely detailed explanations of various phenomena and applications of infrared photography are still as valid as they were originally.

This book really cries out for a new edition, updated with information on digital infrared photography. But for now, if you can only have one book on infrared, this is the one to get.

Pieces from My Mind
Published in Paperback by Creative Arts Book Co (July, 2001)
Author: Carl E. Clark
Average review score:

A Clear View of Unheralded American Heroes
Pieces from My Mind provides a close-up, first hand look at the life and times of one of a group of hardworking, heroic Americans few of us have ever heard of. I especially appreciated the fact it was not just a "blood and guts", "damn the torpedoes" WWII tome. The first chapters explain the development of the author's character, which become apparent later in the book.

I truly enjoyed the book and found it an informative and sensitive story of an African-American man's journey through life.
